"Piri Reis - cartographer of Suleiman the Magnificent" exhibition was opened on Saturday in Dubrovnik marking the 500th anniversary of world map published by Ottoman cartographer Piri Reis.

Exhibition was organized under the auspices of Turkish Embassy to Croatia and Turkish Foundation of Underwater Archeology, and will remain open until December 31.

At the exhibition, visitors can see Dubrovnik as it was in the 16th century from the perspective of Ottoman sailor and cartographer.

"Navigation Book" (Kitab-i Bahriye), dates from 1521 and it is considered as one of the most famous pre-modern books of sea navigation.

After Dubrovnik, maps of Piri Reis will be exhibited in Rijeka, Porec, Zagreb, Sibenik and Zadar.

Exhibitions are part of a series of international events organized by Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism.

The exhibition in Dubrovnik is based on the replicas and reproductions. A mainstay of the exhibition are models of eastern Adriatic ports. Maps of Sibenik, Zadar and Cres are reproduced on "Iznik" pottery, ceramics technique which was very popular at the time of Suleiman the Magnificent, the Ottoman sultan known for its numerous legal reforms that marked his era.
