Question:

As salaam alaikum. Is it permissible in the Shafii madhhab for a Muslim woman to marry a non-Muslim man who respects her religion?

Answer:

wa alaykum salam wa rahmatuLlahi wa barakatuHu,

It is not permissible for a Muslim woman to marry a non-Muslim man.

In his Tamhid v. 12, p. 21, Ibn ‘Abd al-Barr related an ijma‘ on this, as did Imam Qurtubi in Jami’ Ahkam al-Qur’an v. 3, p. 72. Hence, the matter is not specific to the Shafi’i Madhhab, there is a standing consensus from all the authoritative scholars from all the madhahib on the issue.
