A suicide bomber blew up an explosives-packed car at the gates of an Italian military base in Herat Monday and a second explosion ripped through a busy downtown intersection in the normally peaceful western city, officials said. At least four Afghans were killed. Five Italian soldiers were wounded, one of them gravely, Italian Defense Minister Ignazio La Russa said.

Three hundred drug traffickers are on death row in Iran, the judiciary said, reflecting Tehran’s hard line on narcotics which has added to international concerns over its extensive use of capital punishment.

“For 300 drug-related convicts, including those who were in possession of at least 30 grams of heroin, execution verdicts have been issued,” Sharq daily quoted Tehran prosecutor-general Abbas Jafari Dolatabadi as saying on Monday.

Syrian government troops backed by tanks attacked two central towns Sunday in an attempt to stop round-the-clock protests there against President Bashar Assad’s regime, killing at least two people and wounding several others, activists and a rights group said.

Security forces in several other parts of the country fired on crowds holding overnight demonstrations, causing casualties, activists said.

The Arab League decided on Saturday to seek full U.N. membership for a Palestinian state in the besiged Gaza Strip and the occupied West Bank, with occupied East Jerusalem as its capital.

The Arab League's peace process committee, meeting in Doha, said it would request membership for the state of Palestine at the U.N. General Assembly's meeting in New York in September.

Islamic teachers and imams in America have begun signing an open letter declaring that there is no clash between their religious faith and the theory of biological evolution.

The Imam Letter, launched this week in the US, is the latest challenge to Creationists of the three Abrahamic religions who reject evolution in favour of Creationism.

Creationism is the religious belief that all species were created in exactly the form they appear today.

Russia has contacts in Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi's entourage with whom it can negotiate his departure, Moscow's special representative on Africa Mikhail Margelov said on Friday.

"We shouldn't talk to Gaddafi himself but with members of his cabinet, possibly with his sons. And we are making such contacts, so there is a hope for a political resolution," Margelov told reporters at the G8 summit in northern France.

Kuwaiti lawyer Mufrih Ghareeb Al-Mitairi has filed a lawsuit at the office of the prosecutor general in Kuwait against two of his compatriots, a businessman and a lawyer, for defaming the late Sheikh Abdul Aziz Bin Baz (the Saudi grand mufti for most of the 1990s) and Sheikh Muhammad bin Abdul Wahab (the 18th century Islamic scholar) linking their Islamic ideologies to terrorism, the local Arabic daily Al-Eqtisadiah reported Thursday.

A new study shows that an increasing number of Indian families with one girl are aborting pregnancies when prenatal tests reveal another female.

The study to be published in the medical journal Lancet on Tuesday says the decline in the numbers of girls is larger in richer and better-educated households. It says a 1996 law that bans revealing the gender of a fetus has been largely ineffective.

Georgia's parliament has branded the 19th-century killings of the Muslim Circassian minority by Russia's tsarist forces as genocide in a resolution likely to further strain Tbilisi's ties with Moscow.

Originally from the northwest Caucasus, Circassians say 1.5 million of their ancestors were systematically killed in a 1860-64 military campaign to conquer the Caucasus Mountain area on the southern border of today's Russia.

The European Union imposed sanctions on Syrian President Bashar Assad and other senior officials on Monday, raising pressure on his government to end weeks of violence against protesters.

EU foreign ministers agreed at a meeting in Brussels to expand restrictions against Syria by adding Assad and nine other senior members of the government to a list of those banned from traveling to the EU and subject to asset freezes.
