Celebrating the Prophet’s Birth An Innovation of Guidance

By Attahawi / 23 Jan 2013

Among the great innovations of guidance is the annual celebration of the Prophet’s (peace and blessings be upon him) birth(Mawlid un-Nabiy).

This event is commemorated by Muslims all over the world who join together for such reward able deeds as reciting from the Qur’an, chanting Islamic praises, telling the story of the Prophet’s birth, teaching Religious Knowledge, slaughtering animals to feed to the poor, and gathering to thank and praise Allah and ask Him to exalt the honor of Prophet Muhammad, sallallahu alayhi wa sallam.

Dispelling myths about Mawlid

There are three types of bid'ah - obligatory, forbidden and desired.

Al-Hafiz Abu al-Khair as-Sakhawi, may Allah have mercy upon him, stated in his book of Fatwas: “None of the pious predecessors, who lived in the first three centuries of Islam, used to celebrate Mawlid [the way it is celebrated today]. People started commemorating it later.
