The number of registered Syrian refugees jumped 10 percent in just one week to more than 1.1 million, a UN aid official said yesterday.
Fighting in Syria has escalated in recent months, with the regime stepping up attacks on opposition strongholds. The UN refugee agency said the number of Syrians fleeing to neighboring countries has risen to 8,000 a day from 3,000 in December.

Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati urged Arab states to help Lebanon cope with the rising numbers of Syrian refugees flooding to the country and stretching its scare resources.
Mikati said Lebanon will need at least $370 million in support this year under the current conditions.

U.N. Refugee Agency chief Antonio Guterres says the current level of Syrian refugees could go up to two or three times the current level by the end of 2013 if the present flow continues.
The U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees Antonio Guterres said on Sunday (March 10) there could be two or three times the one million registered Syrian refugees outside the country by the end of 2013 if the rise in numbers continues at its current rate.

Hundreds of Syrians seeking asylum in Jordan, are passing through to the neighboring country through illegal crossing points.
Facing rough weather and harsh living conditions, the influx of refugees into Jordanian territories is sharply increasing as Syrians flee deadly violence across the country.
Syrians are passing through more than 45 crossing points which stretch across the Syria-Jordan border, with a number of them coming through the illegal crossings.

Thousands of people in Mali have been forced to flee their homes amid the French-led war on the West African nation.
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) said that more than 5000 Malian refugees have arrived in Mauritania alone since January 11, when France launched a war on Mali under the pretext of halting the advance of fighters in the country.
