Attitudes toward Muslims in Italy: survey

At least half of those surveyed in Italy, Greece and Poland say they have a negative opinion of the Muslims who live in their country. Public opinion is divided on this question in Spain, while in Germany and the UK a majority says they have positive views of Muslims. The most favorable ratings are registered in France (72% favorable), which among the seven nations surveyed has the highest percentage of Muslims in the national population.

Marriam Ahmed, a US scholar, Wednesday claimed that an estimated 30,000 Americans embraced Islam every year in spite of negative propaganda against Muslims and their religion. Marriam Ahmed, Assistant Director Programmes and Operations in the Berkeley Center for Religion, Peace, and World Affairs at Georgetown University, United States, was addressing as a guest speaker of a lecture titled “Islam and America Today: From 9/11 to Boston Bombings” here at International Islamic University Islamabad (IIUI), Female Campus.


Muslim Population in Canada Focus

The growth of Muslim population in Canada is the focus of a survey, which will also shed light on the increasing proportion of people with no religious affiliation in the country.

“There seems to be growing concern about the growth of Islam, arising from high-profile incidents in the news,” Jack Jedwab, executive director of the Association for Canadian Studies, told Postmedia News agency on Tuesday, May 7.


French Want Tougher Anti-Hijab Laws

The majority of French support imposing tougher laws on the wearing of hijab in the southern European country, a new survey has revealed, putting the Muslim headscarf in the heart of a new controversy, France 24 reported.

The poll by the French marketing and opinion center BVA found that 86 percent of French support introducing legislation that would ban “all signs of religious and political affiliation” in private schools and nurseries.

A growing number of young Muslim girls are joining Girl Scout troops in southeast Michigan, forming new friendships based on faith and aspiring for taking new leadership roles when they get older.

“We want them to be strong and take on leadership roles in the future,” Rana Alaouie, who’s a volunteer and has two daughters in the group, told Arab American News on Thursday, March 21.


Strasbourg Mosque Welcomes French Tours

“From the very beginning, we wanted to be open to the people around us,”Said Aalla, a Strasbourg jurist who is president of the mosque’s governing council, told The Washington Post.

In recent years, however, there is a notable number of native Spaniards who have converted to Islam in Spain and they are recognized publicly as new Muslims. This may raise many questions on the nature of the Islamic preaching activities in Spain and the official Islamic presence in the country. Islam has come to be an attractive religion to some Spaniards disregarding the fact that its international media image is not generally a positive one.


Serb Policeman Jailed for Muslim Genocide

Bosnia's war crimes court has sentenced a former Serb police officer for 20 years for his role in murdering Muslims during the 1995 Srebrenica massacre, the worst atrocity in Europe since World War Two.

Bozidar Kuvelja "participated in the expulsion of the Srebrenica population, detention of men and execution of detainees," presiding Judge Jasmina Kosovic said, Agence France Presse (AFP) reported on Friday, January 11.
