More than 430,000 people were murdered around the world in 2012 according to a new report by the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).
The "Global Study on Homicide", released in London on Thursday, reveals that almost half of the homicides are in Africa and the Americas.

Millions of people around the world do not have enough food to eat while at the same time a colossal amount of edible food is simply being thrown out by millions of households across Europe.
The UN says, in Austria alone, 158,000 tonnes of perfectly good food is tossed in the bin each year and 90 million tonnes is discarded in Europe as a whole.

The number of known executions around the world rose almost 15 percent in 2013, with the spike due in part to more executions in Iran and Iraq, a new Amnesty International report says.
The report released by the London-based rights group on Wednesday comes on the heels of a decision this week by an Egyptian court to sentence to death 529 alleged supporters of the Muslim Brotherhood. The group has called the action “grotesque”.

The number of Muslims in the prison population has more than doubled to nearly 12,000 in a decade, figures from the Ministry of Justice show.
The dramatic rise prompted calls for ministers to investigate whether police and the courts are treating Muslims more harshly, with some suggesting the rise is due to Islamophobia.

The AP-GfK poll shows 59 percent of Americans now disapprove of Obama (including 37 percent who are very disappointed) — a point higher than the previous high set in December.

Attitudes toward women’s equality are dimmer in North Africa than in the rest of the continent, according to a new poll of about 50,000 people across 34 African countries.
The Afrobarometer poll, conducted in 2011-2013 and released Thursday, found women are at a disadvantage compared to men across Africa, but support for women’s equality is growing.

Russian President Vladimir Putin's approval rating has reached 80 percent, with a majority of Russians saying the country is heading in the right direction, an independent pollster said Wednesday.
A poll by the Levada Center said public support for the Russian leader rose by 8 percent since Putin delivered an address to parliament on Crimea before the predominantly Russian-speaking region rejoined Russia last week.
